The dramatic beauty of Iceland is legendary. In the land of fire and ice, there is one wellness experience that should be top of your list – the Blue Lagoon.
I didn’t know what to expect, and I had high hopes as I had visited a few spa retreats before. The Blue Lagoon experience far exceeded my expectations.

In the milky blue, mineral-rich steaming waters, it’s the best place to unwind and relax. You’ll definitely feel like a new, relaxed version of yourself after visiting this therapeutic spa.
Background
People have named the Blue Lagoon in Iceland as one of the top 25 wonders of the world. Its secret ingredient is the unique geothermal seawater. You won’t find it anywhere else on Earth. This resource is rich in silica, algae and minerals. These elements are responsible for the skin-nourishing power of the Blue Lagoon.

Water
The Blue Lagoon water comprises of silica, algae and mineral salts. This combination is the reason for the milky blue colour of the water.
Silica
Silica is a component of lava and combines with geothermal seawater in volcanic areas deep underground. When the hot water reaches the surface and cools, it turns into the white mud mask, one of the Blue Lagoon’s signature masks.
Algae
This microorganism is unique to geothermal seawater. The Blue Lagoon cultivates and harvests this through sustainable methods.
Mineral salts
The Blue Lagoon’s water contains mineral salts and other rich minerals.
The combination of these 3 elements – silica, algae, and mineral salts – results in the healing and rejuvenating properties of the Blue Lagoon.

Blue Lagoon experience
The day I visited the Blue Lagoon, it was a freezing 3 degrees Celsius.
After check-in, depending on your package, you’ll receive a towel, a robe and be allocated a locker to store your belongings.
Once you’re ready, next stop is the Blue Lagoon. Take off your robe and get ready to enter a wellness paradise like no other.
The Blue Lagoon water is a luxurious temperature of between 37 degrees Celsius (98 F) to 40 degrees Celsius (104F) so it feels like a warm bath or sauna. It’s a welcome retreat from the cooler artic Icelandic temperatures.
There is no time limit on your visit. I spent about 2.5 hours in the lagoon, which was ideal.
What to bring
To get the best out of your visit to the Blue Lagoon, I recommend you bring the following:
- Swimming costume
- Change of clothes
- Swimming cap or shower cap
- Flip flops or thongs
- Waterproof bag for mobile.
Location

Things to know
Here are some things to be aware of when you visit the Blue Lagoon.
It’s highly recommended that you don’t go underneath the water and swim in the Blue Lagoon. Better to remain upright in the lagoon. If you put your head underwater, the elements will leave a slimy residue on your hair, and it will take at least two weeks or more to get rid of.
Don’t wear a smartwatch in the lagoon as the water will corrode the mechanisms. Same goes for jewellery, it will be ruined.
Also, be really careful with your mobile in and around the Blue Lagoon. If you want to take your mobile with you, make sure you have a waterproof bag or cover to put over it. You can buy these at the lagoon.
Or you can do what I did and take photos and videos and then put mobile back in the locker before entering the lagoon. This way, you can really enjoy the experience without worrying about your mobile.
Finally, have fun! Your visit to the Blue Lagoon will be a once in a lifetime experience. You’ll leave more relaxed, renewed and with your wellbeing batteries fully recharged.
A world of wellbeing awaits you at the Blue Lagoon! Enjoy!
