What is gig tripping?

Gig tripping is travelling locally or internationally to see a music artist play live. Combining travel with music. Travellers are gig tripping in large numbers and this is fuelling the trend.

A perfect example is the Taylor Swift Eras tour phenomenon. With the concert being held in limited cities worldwide, many fans are travelling to see her perform.

In Australia, Swifties travelled in large numbers to Sydney and Melbourne to see Taylor perform. I spoke to a lady who had travelled from Perth Western Australia with her two young daughters to Melbourne to attend the Eras tour. It was school holidays so the perfect time to spend a long weekend in Melbourne.

The same thing happened on the Asian leg of the Eras tour. As Tokyo and Singapore were the only Asian cities on the tour list, many Swifties travelled from the Philippines, Indonesia and other countries to spend a night at the Eras tour.

There is also an economic benefit for the cities and countries where the music artist visits. If music fans are travelling internationally, they will require flights, accommodation, transport, meals and more. Savvy travel companies have been raising prices (especially hotels) due to high demand and not enough supply.
