Use internet hotspots

Need to access the internet but over your monthly data limit? Try using an internet hotspot at your hotel or airport while waiting for your next flight. This saves big money.

Use hotel WIFI to save money

Not sure how to activate your hotspot? Go to Settings on your mobile phone, click on WIFI and select an available network. Sign in and enter a password and you’re connected.

Don’t do any financial transactions while hot spotting as your personal information may not be secure. Hot spotting is best for basic internet searches and non-financial transactions.

Top tip: Need to install some updates on mobile phone? Use a hotspot to avoid costly download charges on your next phone bill.

Avoid foreign ATMs

To save on fees, avoid using foreign Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) for cash withdrawals.

If you are using your debit or credit card to make overseas ATM cash withdrawals, you could be charged an overseas transaction fee plus an exchange rate fee. You may also be charged a foreign ATM withdrawal fee if using one not owned by your bank. These fees can really add up and blow your budget.

Better alternative? Bring the right amount of foreign cash with you, or use a travel or credit card so there’s no need to withdraw from an ATM.

Use shared transfers

To save money on transport costs to and from the airport, use shared transfers. Pre-book and pre-pay before leaving and you won’t need to worry about having cash ready to pay.

You also get to chat with fellow travellers and remember your driver is a local expert. Ask the driver questions on the way about the destination to help you plan your ultimate holiday itinerary.

Use shared transfer to save money

The only downside is you may need to wait around at the airport while the driver collects all the passengers on his list and stop at multiple locations on the way. A bit time consuming but it is a big cost saving.

Buy supermarket food

If you are looking to save money on eating, buy food at the local supermarket. Depending on where you are travelling to, most supermarkets have ready to-go meals or meal deals. You can usually get a sandwich, wrap or a small meal such as a salad with a drink all in the one price.

More money saved mean more spending money! It is also healthier than a big restaurant meal.

Learn foreign words

You may want to learn a few foreign language words if you are travelling to a non-English speaking country. Google Translate is a great tool which converts English into a number of languages. There are other great language apps and tools available as well.

Good words to learn in the foreign language you’ll be using include; hello, goodbye, please, thank you, good morning, good afternoon and good evening and how much does it cost.

Learn foreign words to save money

Your efforts will be greatly appreciated by the locals. You may even receive a better price while shopping and it gives you the chance to try a bit of bargaining.

Bonjour, Buongiorno, Hola, Guten Tag! Be brave and give it a try. You can do it!
