Before you go
Track expenses
Track your spending via a money diary. Write down your daily spend in a notebook or phone and review the list at the end of the month. Record things you buy and bills you pay over the period. You’ll be surprised to see what you are spending each month and where the opportunities are to save money.
Book online
Have you booked your trip online? This is the number one way to save money on travel. If you are used to going to a travel agent and haven’t done this before don’t get overwhelmed. Break down each part of your travel itinerary into small bite sized chunks and book one at a time. Do price research before booking so you know you are getting the best deal.

Do a “no online shopping” month
Before your trip, do a “no online shopping” month to build spending money. Go shopping in your clothes wardrobe, I bet there are clothes you haven’t worn that are brand new. Get a head start on that pile of booking you have been meaning to read. Go on, you can do it!
Do a subscription audit
Do you really need your Netflix or other monthly subscriptions? Are you paying too much for them? Are there better deals available? Search for a better deal or if you don’t need the subscriptions, cancel them.
Sell things online
Do you have spare things at home you don’t need, aren’t using, no longer value or appreciate? Selling them online via eBay or a similar website like Facebook is a great way to raise money. Your unwanted items will be another person’s treasure and by recycling you’re doing a good thing for the planet.
Cook your own meals
It takes time to cook your own meals. If you don’t like cooking everyday why not do some bulk cooking (a few hours on one day) and freeze the meals? I know its easier to get a takeaway. Try to avoid the urge and you will save a lot of money. Your body will also thank you.
Book activities in advance
A lot of travel companies offer huge price discounts if you book in advance. Just be aware, the bookings may be non refundable. What are you waiting for, do it now! Money savings are waiting for you!
While travelling
Walk everywhere
If you are close to the attractions at your destination, why not put on your sports shoes and walk? Good for your health and wallet.
No restaurant eating
To save money on food costs while travelling, shop at supermarkets for your meals and use vouchers if applicable.
Go on a free walking tour
An increasingly popular way to save money while visiting a new destination is to join a free walking tour. Tip the guide at the end with the amount you want. Any tip no matter the size is always appreciated!
